Elder Hall, University Of Adelaide, Sat 19 Sep

Combining the energy and dynamism of many of Adelaide’s best young classical musicians with a very experienced and well respected conductor (Keith Crellin OAM – who as a youngster himself was the first violinist winner of the ABC Young Performers Award – 1972) and with feature virtuosos who are in high demand all over the world (Natsuko Yoshimoto – Violin and Caleb Wright – Viola) – the promise of a great evenings musical entertainment was well realised.

In terms of gigs on a budget – this is very good value; a full orchestra experience, the sounds, dynamics and pieces from past masters: Mozart (Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra), Korsakov (Scheherazade) and one from highly lauded, very much Adelaide local, Graeme Koehne (excerpts from Between Two Worlds). One of the highlights of the evening was seeing the composer acknowledged and taking a bow – something that you don’t see all that often at classical concerts.

The other major highlight was the virtuoso performers in the Mozart Sinfonia. While the orchestra provided solid support, the dance, and even marriage of the violin and viola playing together, apart and around each other was a delight and an inspiration to the conductor, the orchestra and to the audience.

An evening of grand music, both classical and more modern, the joy of youth mixed with some very appreciative and supportive experience – and we, the audience, get to witness it first hand and immerse in the soundscapes.

Highly recommended!
