La Bohème – Upstairs, Thu 25 Feb

Being an adult is not simply as easy as turning 18 and suddenly knowing it all. Being an adult means making decisions, getting a ‘real job’, and often requires a lot of maths. Most of the time, these lessons do not require interpretive dance and nipple pasties, but most of the time, these adults are not Luna Eclipse.

As a journey of self-discovery, Luna’s Adult-ish is an entertaining one. From taxes and superannuation to exercising and not eating Nutella straight out of the jar, Luna shows an instinctive comic timing and commendable willingness to ad-lib. Sweet and yet worldly at the same time, her expressive face manages to give even the silliest sequence a pleasantly surprising depth of emotion.

Make no mistake though, this is a funny show. Luna has a quick wit and a knack for finding the humour in the ordinary. The burlesque numbers are clever and cute, using fun concepts and eclectic song choices to great effect. The ending in particular was a pop favourite that certainly rubbed the audience the right way.

It’s not often you can say this, but the audience participation was actually a highlight of the show with fun games and sing-a-longs that never felt forced and kept momentum going throughout the show.

Tying the show together with a heart-warming reveal, it was easy to tell by the smiles around the room that Luna Eclipse had her audience eating out of the palm of her hand.

Adult-ish is a delightful, whimsical, tassel-filled parade through growing up and doing what you’re supposed to do – only to realise that doing what you love is more important.
