NEON (Formerly the Bistro), Adelaide Festival Centre, Sun 14 Jan.

Adorning the itinerary of the Adelaide’s French Festival this year is the French Wine and Cheese Masterclass, courtesy of The Smelly Cheese Shop and presented by cheese enthusiast Valerie Henbest. Henbest’s love for cheese shines when she impresses the subtle intricacies of this exalted pleasure upon the most fortunate to have arrived this day. Her sharp wit and confidence is matched with her thick French accent which, although cliché, adds an authentic charm to the vibe of the event. It was a cheese-lover’s dream.

The tables were set with a selection of five cheese samples and three wine glasses per seat and underneath each plate was a sheet of paper for note taking. One by one, Henbest explained the history of the cheese and the region it came from, how the cheese is made and with what kind/blend of milks, and which wine to perfectly cleanse the palate before going back for more. She also made mention of certain nutritional attributes of each cheese: such as which kind contains the most calcium, keratin, fat percentages, penicillin and which kind is the easiest to digest. Finally, after the array of tastes and textures had been sampled a nice white grape dessert wine was served; the perfect la touche finale.

This masterclass is a must-do for any cheese enthusiast. An afternoon filled with culture, humour, quality cheese and French wines; what’s not to like? You will be enlightened, your taste-buds will love you and, chances are, you’ll be pleasantly merry by the end of it all.

The Smelly Cheese Shop is at Shop 44 in Adelaide Central Market, Gouger St. Or head on over to <smellycheese.com.au> for more details.
