The Garage International @ Town Hall, Tue Feb 17

The incredible skills in this act are hard to believe. You need to see them for yourself! Fresh off a plane, battling some jet lag, Declan Zapala puts on a spectacular guitar show. The Englishman with “some Irish blood in him” plays a brilliant mix between classic and original pieces that are simply stunning.

Tributes to Eric Roche, Carlos Domeniconi and Bach are all beautifully performed, but Zapala’s own compositions are out of this world. His freakishly quick hands and original percussion elements will blow you away. He plays one song for his mum that is inspired in part by Judi Dench’s character in the movie Philomena. Do not bring a jacket if it’s cold; this piece will warm your heart.

If his astounding talent is not enough, the man is genuinely funny as well. Zapala is not just playing music; he tells stories, jokes, gives guitar tips and has some classic banter with the audience. It helps him move seamlessly between each piece while he tunes his guitar. There is not a dull moment in the show.

Zapala is basically a musical wizard. That is the only logical conclusion after witnessing the magic he performed on his two guitars. The opportunity to see a breathtaking talent such as this in person should not be missed.
