Dunstan Playhouse, The Mar 5

Eric San, otherwise known as Kid Koala, is a world renowned scratch DJ, composer, graphic novelist… and the list goes on. This latest offering from the Montreal-based musician, Nufonia Must Fall, features the beautiful and captivating Afiara Quartet, also based in Canada, and Kid Koala himself on turntables and piano along with a flurry of cinematographers, puppeteers and behind-the-scenes almost-magicians who create a spellbinding tale of a lonely office girl and the simple robot that works with her.

Their love story and personal journey is set in black and white cityscape with miniature sets and the finest of detail in movement, timing, and seamless transition between scenes and the evolving tale of love. We leave thinking of those who pass us in the street, or in our daily life, and the impact they can have.

The quartet alone are stunning, worth seeing on their own accord. Their musical timing and control is faultless, their relationship with what is occurring on screen is nothing short of astonishing, This is a show where after you have absorbed the storyline and end result of the characters and what happens with them, you think to yourself ‘how do people come up with ideas such as this?

Koala’s vision, execution and casting are simply breathtaking. A light-hearted game of Nufonia Bingo at the beginning of the show for all the audience members sets the scene for us, immediately warming to our host and main man and this, in turn, develops into utter amazement as we start to grasp the undercurrent of activity that is occurring onstage in the dark to create this live to air performance.

Family friendly (8+) and mesmerising in every way, you will leave Nufonia Must Fall just a little bit in love with the world, yourself.
