Catherine Blanch & Puddles PIty Party - The Clothesline

Catherine & Puddles

It’s easy to see why the seven-foot-something sad-faced Puddles has had more than 30 million YouTube hits. He may spend his time feeling sorry for himself, but he does so in style, his magnificent baritone belting out cool versions of much-loved songs from like ABBA’s Dancing Queen, The Angels’ Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again? and Tina Turner’s We Don’t Need Another Hero from Mad Max III – Beyond Thunderdome.

Puddles pounces into his show with Lorde’s Royals, instantly taking himself into the audience and them into him. There are no words spoken, but his voice and blood-shot eyes (too much crying or make-up?) tell the stories, coax the laughs and entice people into his onstage antics.

Screened images catch the eye: hypnotic spirals; old Popeye cartoons; fan selfies around the globe. But it’s the (mostly) willing audience members that bring the laughter– with a just little gentle persuasion from our Pierrot-esque host.

Including hand-drawn pictures, poetry and coffee beans, Puddles Pity Party is a whole bunch of brilliant. The real pity part of this party would only come from not getting to see Puddles in action. So, go!
