Osmond Terrace Function Centre at Norwood Hotel, Sun 18 Mar.

[MUSIC/CONTEMPORARY – SA]

Supernova, Adelaide’s meritorious tribute band enriched the Osmond Terrace Function Centre with an extravagant encomium to the commodious Jazz Rock band Chicago. The band is fronted by a vocal trio of Matt Noble, Jacqui Yeo and Callum Campbell whose banter and repartee is almost as good as their vocal prowess; joining them is Brett Stafford on guitar, Sean Tims on Keys and guitar, Brad Polain on drums, Tim Bowen on bass, Gareth Davis on trombone, Robbie Chenoweth on trumpet and their Saxophonist, manager and the butt of many a joke Frank Althuizen.

It was a two set show of about 45 minutes each featuring a broad and diverse selection of songs from Chicago’s career; from the early days of the Chicago Transit Authority album with Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? and Beginnings to 25 or 6 to 4 from the Chicago (one) album, to the late seventies and eighties era of their career with Alive Again from Hot Streets, Baby Please Don’t Go from Chicago X, Bad Advice from Chicago 16 and Stay The Night from Chicago 17. Also included was a notable cover of Higher And Higher (sung by Michael McDonald) as a reference to the bands later years.

The performance was very ballad heavy in song choice – perfect for those who like a slow love song with the occasional hit of an up tempo rock/fusion tune. The band received a call for an encore to which they responded with Hard To Say and Get Away from the 1982 album Chicago 16.

A marvellous display of musicianship and fantastic vocal performances all round. Supernova are high class and a pleasure to listen to.
