MV Dolphin Explorer, Queen’s Wharf, Port Adelaide, Sat 17 Mar.

[MUSIC/ROCK – SA]

At the start of our night, the three decks of the Dolphin Explorer had various people milling about checking out the scenery, but by the time this group were playing their encores, the boat was a ghost ship except for the room where the band was playing. This deck, with standing room only, really rocked. People everywhere had their feet tapping or were singing along, catching glimpses of the band through the people stomping and dancing on the dancefloor.

The boat rocked, not on the water, as the night air and trip through the open waters of Port Adelaide was calm, but instead due to the sound made by these six musicians.

Anthony Mara has taken on the mammoth job of paying tribute to Billy Joel. Anthony does dress like Billy and also has the obligatory ‘Billy beard’ but does not impersonate, rather more certainly, he does his best ‘impression’ of the man himself. And he does this well; moving from piano man to front man with ease.

The other five musicians, who I am sad to say, that although they were introduced throughout the night, their names were lost to the crowd, helped rock the boat too. They each played their part in the recreation of Billy Joel’s music, and did it well. The personal highlights for me were the rock solid drums (played with obvious enthusiasm for the music) and the dirty sax, again played with watchable joy for the sound being created.

This group travel the country playing the songs of Billy Joel (with part proceeds of ticket sales going to the MS Society). If you are a fan of the man himself, you will not be disappointed with the evening out.
