[AUSTRALIA ~ WORLD PREMIERE ~ ADELAIDE EXCLUSIVE]

Festival Theatre, Adelaide Festival Centre, Fri 10 Jun.

The theatre is packed with eager patrons looking forward to seeing The Cat Empire, and out they come to the thunderous applause of the crowd. Straight away they are into it with us all toe tapping and seat dancing to their unique musical style.

They are joined onstage during their show by a special guest line up of cabaret performers from the festival’s Glorious Misfits including, a raunchy burlesque dancer, Anna Lumb with her astounding hula hoop performance, Louie Biggs with his onstage presence and hat show and Captain Frodo and his amazing contorting self. The Cat Empire - Image by Janine Spearpoint - AdCabFest18 - The Clothesline

Throughout the show the boys have us dancing in our seats and at the one hour mark, the energy is too much to contain and fans, young and seasoned alike, jump to their feet and let the ‘Latin infused’ magic sweep them up and away.

The marvellous horn section have their moment (which could be called a brass off?) to showcase their immense musical skills, and is just a joy to watch! Of course a musical interlude to highlight the percussionists is truly fabulous and the drums draw us in with their rhythmic beat! The pianist’s fingers are hypnotic to watch as they float like waves across the keys. So much talent on stage; it’s hard to know who to watch without missing anything.

With more than a decade writing and performing together, it’s no surprise the way they gel on stage, creating an amazing mix of sounds with songs that included How To Explain, Wolves, Two Shoes, Bulls, The Chariot, the encore song was the all-time favourite Hello. The entire Festival Theatre audience – even the ‘nosebleed section’ – are on their feet for the final songs and the joy and love for this band is in the air!

We are told that it may be the last time they play these ‘old’ classics  – but don’t despair fans of The Cat Empire a new album, Rising With The Sun, is on the way, and I for one, cannot wait!
