Royal Croquet Club – The Panama Club, Sat 13 Feb

Sit back, relax, and get ready for a really funny show you can take the whole family to. As the capacity crowd clambers into The Panama Club a zany pianist with Einstein hair attempts to climb through elastic curtains with his elastic body. Hilarious! He attempts to take the cover off his piano, and the virtuoso ends up on top of it! Ice skating definitely ain’t his thing. One thing after another goes wrong as the pianist prepares for his performance. But he solves each problem with playful ingenuity.

Thomas Monckton and Circo Aereo have an inventive style, full of slapstick humour and acrobatics. The wordless show has a little Charlie Chaplin here, a little Mr Bean there and a delightful sprinkling of circus magic. Interspersed with the piano routine we are entertained by a quick change matador, a gun slinger, an under-the-covers puppet show, and finger love. Oh yes, a pair of dancing fingers courted, made a family, died and went to heaven! This bendable, eccentric, clever and dusty pianist had us captivated from start to finish.

It’s a smokin’ hot piano act – but does he ever get around to playing a tune? You will have to go to the show to find out!

Karen Bailey and Terry Izatt
