Gluttony – The Bally, Tue 23 Feb

Given the title of the show it’s hardly surprising that this is basically a paean to alcoholism, or at least wine. Red Red Wine was playing as the audience settled into The Bally and set the appropriate tone. Let’s just forget for a minute that Natasha York congratulated anyone who was drunk – at 6 pm.

Wearing a magical bra that holds all sorts of handy items, York has bundles of energy, looked vivacious even when hung over, and is actually quite funny as she sings and chats her way through a musical repertoire explaining why she likes wine so much. These Things Take Wine could easily be retitled Everything Takes Wine as she seems to need wine to cope with just about everything.

Famous songs get reworked to fit in with her love affair with wine (Time After Wine), and a scene where she accosts a street busker to play Stand By Me for her is really funny. We learn that a long lost absent father may be the reason she drinks so much but she ends up getting drunk with him when they finally meet so that doesn’t stem the wine flow.

The show ends triumphantly with York belting out I’m Still Standing. There’s no remorse. With her and wine it’s a case of till death do us part.

And everyone loved her for it!
