The Garden Of Unearthly Delights – The Spiegeltent, Sun 21 Feb

It’s obvious why VELVET continues to perform to sell-out Adelaide crowds; it is a returning Fringe show, has prime position in The Garden and stars legendary singer Marcia Hines. But the main reason is it’s an incredibly polished and entertaining show that people love. A breathtaking night of disco exuberance!

Director Craig Ilott has assembled a winning formula of charismatic singers, dancers and acrobats to perform to classic disco tunes, accentuated by powerful lighting. Singer/songwriter Brendan Maclean connects the story, progressing from naïve, curious and shocked by the commanding disco world that he has stumbled into to embracing the flamboyance and energy it exhumes. He is joined onstage by a talented international cast, including acrobats Stephen Williams, Mirko Köckenberger and Emma Goh, who were all supported by singers Chaska Halliday and Rechelle Mansour, the very percussive DJ Joe Accaria and of course the engrossing Marcia Hines.

The music has the audience dancing in their seats with classics like Le Freak, Boogie Wonderland and Turn The Beat Around. With the disco divas singing and beats pumping, wonderful moments of incredible strength and balance are displayed for the audience to marvel by the acrobats. Especially memorable tonight was the incredible aerial spectacle during It’s Raining Men showcasing Stephen Williams (La Soiree’s ‘Bath Boy’). Other highlights included Marcia Hines singing You and a beautiful acoustic Staying Alive sung by Brendan Maclean who accompanied himself on ukulele. There was also comic relief provided by Hula hoop expert, Craig Reid, which was both hilarious and astoundingly skillful.

If you haven’t already seen VELVET make sure you buy your ticket quickly as many remaining performances have already sold out. Disco is back in fashion!
