Ruthie May (ABC Books/Harper Collins Publishers) 2014, RRP $19.99

Count My Christmas Kisses is a lovely hardback cover book especially for children aged 0-4. Written by Perth-born but Sydney-based author Ruthie May with illustrations by Tamsin Ainslie, Count My Christmas Kisses is the follow-up to Count My Kisses, Little One. May also wrote Stew My Cockatoo: My Aussie Cookbook, show her flair for both children and adult writing. Count My Christmas Kisses - Ruthie May - ABC Books - The Clothesline

With cream-coloured pages that give that old-time feel to the story, May has written some beautiful rhymes for babies and toddlers – and, of course, mums and dads who are reading to them – as they count their kisses up to number ten. Kisses under the mistletoe and as they catch the falling snow, kisses as they ring the bells or play the first Noel.

Tamsin Ainslie’s illustrations are adorable, cute and maybe slightly understated; curly-haired children with their toys all rugged-up in woollen jumpers and hats as they decorate the tree, sing Christmas Carols and head off to bed. What a wonderful Christmas gift this would make for babies as they learn to count with their parents.
