Adeladies: Best Of The Fringe’s Funny Women – Adelaide Fringe Review

The Sky Room at The Griffins Hotel, Tue 13 Mar. [COMEDY/STAND UP – UK/AUS/CAN/USA] The ‘best of’ comedy shows at the Fringe are always a mixed bag. You’re never quite sure who will turn up on the night. It’s the comedy world’s pot luck dinner. And like a pot luck dinner, not everything will be to your taste. UK comedian Stephanie Laing did a fabulous job as host. Mad About The Boy is her Australian debut and is the story of this ‘lovable little weirdo’ and her mishaps with boys/men. I think Adelaide will appreciate Stephanie’s weirdo ways. Hers is narrative based comedy – self-deprecating and relatable. Next was Shane Kaminowitz whose routine started with IKEA jokes that are well past their used-by date and were not refreshed with new ideas. She struggled to get even a mirthful giggle from the willing audience. Deb Bland immediately addressed her Aboriginality and much of her routine was based around confronting racist stereotypes and taboos. Each punchline felt like just that – a punch to the guts – as Bland appeared to be testing just how far she could push the crowd and get away with it. Hers is certainly crass humour with very few no-go zones.Jordan Best’s monotone delivery and bored Gen Y persona worked well with the content. Hers is sharp, funny comedy and with an edge that set it apart. Claire Healy closed the show with her ukulele and an ‘epic folk ballad’. Healy’s style of musical comedy is very appealing. She is like the lovechild of Liza Minnelli and Tripod, and miraculously, it works.
