The Awkward Years is a 20-minute party that leads you back to your pubescent years via an emotional roller coaster of clumsy memories. Ellen Steele from isthisyours? will grab your hand, pull you under the table and spin the bottle.

We sent Ellen some questions. These are her answers.

Your First gig; when and where and how did it go?

“My first gig was playing an evil priest in my high school musical. I got to wear a pointy beard and strut around malevolently. I didn’t have any lines.”

What drew you into performing?

“The possibility of other pointy beard-wearing roles.”

Who is your favourite performer?

“Anyone who makes me forget I’m watching a performer. I love the feeling of being sucked into a performance that leaves me reeling and wondering how I came to be sitting in a room with strangers.”

Which performer you would most like to be?

“A cross between Dolly Parton and Benedict Cumberbatch, just because I’d like to see what that is.”

What is your best recovery technique for forgetting a line?

“Stand very still and hope the audience will leave the room eventually.”

Elle Steele performs The Awkward Years at Royal Croquet Club’s The Rastelli at various times on Sat Feb 14 until Sun Mar 1.
