Live On 5, Adelaide Oval – Gil Langley Room, Fri 24 Feb.

Theatre meets ‘Dandy’ as we start the evening with a fancy piano intro to herald the start of the quest for the ‘Greatest Improviser In The World’ at the 2nd National Maestro Impro Games. With a definite ‘fun and games’ feel, the directors pulled numbered balls out of a hat and words out of the audience to create a scene.2nd National Maestro Impro Games - Adelaide Fringe 2017 - The Clothesline

Contesters performed skits on the spot, unable to plan in what direction the scene might go! Restrictions involved things like speaking only in rhymes, being limited to two phrases, or switching scenes in an instant. This got some into trouble (scored low for breaking the G-rating rule!), some couldn’t keep up, and others shone. One scene was replayed in four different genres, really testing the actors’ quick thinking skills.

The MC’s warm and friendly style flowed throughout the evening, though her grading system was a little too flexible at times! Standouts were the ‘Fighter Pilot’ scene and the school teacher using croquet as a metaphor for explaining personal space. But you won’t see those scenes – he very nature of the Impro Games is on the spot creativity. What you will be guaranteed is true entertainment and lots of laughs.
