NEON (Formerly Banquet Room), Adelaide Festival Centre, Sun 14 Jan.

The Couture Collection fashion parade was exhibited at the Banquet Room as part of the Adelaide French Festival and in conjunction with the Adelaide Fashion Festival. Hosted by Channel 10 Eyewitness News presenter Kate Freebairn and engineered by some of Adelaide’s finest sound technicians, patrons enjoyed a professional quality presentation and a complimentary glass of champagne. Couture Collection boasts a number of bridal pieces courtesy of Eliza French, Jaime Sortino, Couture+Love+Madness, Greta Kate, Sylvy Earl, Varacalli Couture and Caleche.

Following the parade, the designers were brought to the stage for a Q&A with Freebairn. Eric from Caleche was first in line and after a brief explanation of the company’s history he introduced his new sustainable line of products made from pineapple fibres and plastics. Caleche’s gowns are sold internationally but clients interested in the sustainable gowns will need to visit the Adelaide store.

Caterina from Varacalli Couture was asked about her preferences, to which she declared she loved colour (particularly gold and burgundy) as well as “3D looks”. French says all her dresses are a “one off” and bases her inspiration on individuality. She is a fan of colour and wooden pieces in her work.

Sortino had just returned from New York and stated that his recent inspiration came from 1950s New York fashion and his clients’ desire for simplicity. Kate feels she has a good relationship with her clients and that her inspirations are largely influenced by them. She prefers modern looks and enjoys a challenge.

Cristina from Couture+Love+Madness mentioned her education in London, England studying Advanced Fashion Design saying it was a lengthy process but was great for networking. She recently shot her new collection in Paris.

All designers portrayed themselves to be receptive to their clients’ ideas and are looking forward to trying something completely new and fresh. Good news for engaged couples with a creative streak!
