Royal Croquet Club – The Menagerie, Wed 24 Feb.

Hot Brown Honey is utterly unique and amazing. A combination of clever staging through the performers, costume, music, set, lighting and script explore some of the most important issues of our time. There was a full house tonight and the audience was totally engaged and loudly responsive. This show is a concept that provokes, empowers, enlightens, entertains and delivers alternate voices from a group of six brown women who mainstream music, media and general society often ignores or stereotypes. It is about politics, encouraging resistance and challenging those stereotypes. And yet it is unbelievably fun, joyous and surprising.

It is impossible to convey how powerful the six ‘Honeys’ in this show are. We enter the hive with the Queen Bee overseeing the experience from on high looking out onto the stage. We are encouraged to make noise, learn, take pleasure in seeing strong, feisty, powerful women, who are connected to their cultures do amazing things. The body becomes a vehicle for demonstrating power through dance, aerial ropes, hoops, beats and of course the voice. We see them strip bare and discard the clothes that restrict. The music is loud, pulsating and energizing. The entertainment value is high and the audience is completely won over.

There are so many tear-inducing funny moments to do with female body parts or stereotypes, but there are also confronting truths about the impact of colonisation on indigenous cultures. If you want to see what the world is like when women are truly powerful then go to this. Not to be missed!
