Camp, sexy, & wickedly dark, The Maids follows Claire and Solange as they navigate a world of servitude and fantasy; blurring the lines between reality and illusion. As they try to escape their lives of servitude, they find that there’s one thing they cannot escape: themselves.

Set in the confines of a wealthy household, Solange and Claire engage in elaborate role-playing fantasies while their mistress is away. As their fantasies blend with reality, tensions rise, and the game becomes deadly. Genet’s masterpiece offers a compelling exploration of the human psyche, class politics, and the dynamics of domination and submission. This contemporary adaptation by Adelaide’s own Benedict Andrews and the legendary Andrew Upton delves into their subversive power games with a magnetic wit.

The Maids, directed by James Watson (Miss Julie, PROUD, 4.48 Psychosis) is brought to life by a team of South Australian artists with support from the Helpmann Academy. Featuring an ensemble of some of our best emerging talents; Flinders Drama Centre graduates Emelia Williams, Virginia Blackwell, and Kate Owen. Stalwarts of Famous Last Words Reggie Parker (sound design), and Rhys Stewart (lighting) also return to complete this creative team.

The perfect post-fringe night out, The Maids is as absurd as it is menacing. Kicking off Famous Last Words sophomore 2024 season, this is a show you will not want to miss!
