[COMEDY/STAND UP ~ SA PREMIERE ~ VIC]

The National Wine Centre – Gallery Room, Sub 17 Feb.

A Booklovers Comedy Show is the brainchild of George Dimarelos, a self-confessed book nerd. It features a revolving cast of comedians who bring their book-related stand-up to the stage. Dimarelos is a funny and energetic host and had the small Sunday night crowd quickly onside.A Booklovers Comedy Show sq - George Dimarelos - ADLfringe - The Clothesline

First up was Bob (Clare Kavanagh), who was launching his book, A Life Of Success. Bob is an obnoxious billionaire life coach who is here to sell his shallow philosophies on a successful life. Kavanagh brought Bob to life convincingly – scarily! He was almost too real.

Cathy Schenkelberg, fresh off the plane from the US, performed a mini-musical that skewered L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology, with references to his book, Dianetics. It’s a hot topic right now, with The Book Of Mormon’s huge success, and Schenkelberg brings a fresh perspective.

Mark Butler, whose show is Grammar Don’t Matter On A Second Date, told the story of how he broke up with a girlfriend over an unnecessary apostrophe, an idea that grammar pedants will be completely on board with. This is a show for all the punctuation freaks!

MC Hammersmith, the pastiest white guy you’ve ever seen, rounded off the night with ‘gangsta rap from west London’. He might be the whitest of white rappers, but his capacity to take words from the audience and transform them into spontaneous rap is impressive. Hammersmith, AKA Will Naameh from the Men With Coconuts, is brilliant and was a highlight. Men with Coconuts and MC Hammersmith’s Musical Freestyle Factory! are early tips for hot 2019 Fringe comedy.

If your schtick is comedy with a bookish bent, A Booklovers Comedy Show is a fabulous way to nerd out with all your bookish friends and uncover exciting new Fringe acts to hook up with.
