[MUSIC/Jazz ~ AUS]

Nexus Arts, Wed 19 Feb.

Georgie Aue is an accomplished jazz pianist, singer and songwriter. Tonight she pays tribute to one of her heroes. Georgie’s Tribute to Norah Jones boasts a smooth and interesting selection of Jones’s material. Beginning with Burn from her 2016 Day Breaks album and Back To Manhattan from her 2009 album The Fall, Georgie is quick to point out that she wants us to hear songs from across the spectrum of Jones’s prolific career, and not just the early hits.

However, in a tribute show such as this there is no escaping Jones’s breakthrough Come Away With Me album and songs from this album are core anchor points in the performance, with Come Away With Me, Cold Cold Heart, Nightingale and Don’t Know Why being standouts. Georgie showcases both her vocal and jazz keyboard prowess beautifully throughout the night and adds to the music by relating key aspects of Jones’s musical history.

Her band on this occasion: Sam Cagney on guitar, Josh Baldwin on drums and John Aue on double bass are fabulous, letting go with some adroit and magical solos by John and Sam, and drumming finesse by Josh. Georgie’s own keyboard skills are equally impressive.  But it is her warm tones and her ability to reproduce Norah Jones’s style and range that make this such an enjoyable show for the audience. Without mimicking Jones, Georgie is able to capture the essence of these songs and has made them both a tribute and a demonstration of her own talent.

An elegant, mellow, soulful night of fine songs and excellent musicianship.
