One of the great joys of Adelaide Fringe is seeing a comedian who you know, without a shadow of a doubt, is on the cusp of becoming a big deal. The buzz about Darwin comedian Amy Hetherington this year has been loud and clear. Most of her shows (in the modest Hell’s Kitchen) have sold out and bigger shows were added last week. When she greets audience members on arrival, it is like being met by not just an old friend, but a bestie. The room is full and she welcomes herself to the stage, and is instantly likeable with great material delivered with boundless confidence and unexpected twists and turns. Hetherington talks about life in Darwin, loving dogs, she invokes nineties video games and explores attempts to become a mother. A section on using fishing techniques to enhance fertility was brilliant. Hilarious and conversational, Amy Hetherington makes sure to tick the boxes that secured her Arts Grant (no spoilers), she is a natural and skilled performer and utterly delightful.
