[MUSIC/Performance ~ VIC]

LVL 5 at RCC, Thu 6 Mar.

It confuses me why some punk musicians cannot fucking stand Amyl And The Sniffers. They seem to think they are fake ‘punks’ or something. They are not. They are not even really a Bogan band as they are dismissively referred to, as Bogans usually prefer more straight forward rock music. If anything they are more like a Sharpie band. They play fast and hard and there is a malevolent flavour to their look and sound.

The boys look like they might kick the shit out of you in the car park for some perceived slight, while Amyl would be sitting on the hood of a car drinking a beer and laughing maniacally. Like The Chats, they sing in broad Aussie accents in language any kid in the burbs or country can understand and relate to and are clearly tapping into something people, especially younger people, are craving right now.

The show at LVL 5 is sold out and the crowd is amped up and ready to go when, due to their luggage and instruments getting lost in transit, they finally hit the stage much later than scheduled. They are full of apologies but when they crank up, the place erupts and all is forgiven. The crowd is a blur of arms and legs as a frenzied mosh starts up and doesn’t stop until the band leaves the building. It’s electric, intoxicating racket.

It’s been ten years since the ‘the rock‘n’roll’ of bands like Jet, The Datsuns, D4, BRMC, gave music a pulse it had been missing. Ten years on A&TS are here to shake things up in a world of Sheerans and Adele’s. Each song was a quick kick in the nuts – fast and punchy. I’m Not A Loser, GFY (Go Fuck Yourself), Got You, Cup Of Destiny come at us rapid fire, with Amy rolling round the stage, crowd surfing, shaking her head and shaking her arse.

The guys are smashing it, losing their shirts, sweating on the front rows. It’s a glorious, brash, garage band explosion of a gig. Some Mutts (Can’t Be Muzzled) is clearly already an anthem to this crowd and I can’t wait to see them again. Fucking great stuff.
