[MUSIC/Soul ~ SA]

Main Room at The Gov, Thu 12 Mar.

Aretha – RESPECT was not billed as a tribute show or an imitation of Aretha herself, instead, it is a celebration of the music of Aretha Franklin and proof of the prolific performer and hit maker she was.

As this is not the first time this show has been staged, the ‘Rock Steady Band’, Chris on Keys, PK on guitar, Ken on Bass, David on Drums, Issac on Trumpet and Gabs on Sax are all tight and well-rehearsed with multiple opportunities for the backing vocalists Fiona and Sam to be featured and with Jacqui Yeo’s soaring vocals; together you can clearly see why Aretha Franklin was so well respected within the music industry and by the general public.

With the exception of what seem to be a couple of  band favourites, most of the songs in this evening’s show were ‘hits’ and with the first set ending on Natural Woman you knew there were some ‘crowd’ favourites to come up in the second set for sure.

With the opening bars of Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves the dance floor was full and stayed that way for the rest of the night. The crowd loved every minute of the drive down memory lane in their Pink Cadillacs and crowd participation reached its height on the last song R.E.S.P.E.C.T!

An enjoyable night listening to the music of Aretha brought to life by accomplished Adelaide musicians that clearly love and RESPECT the material.
