Arts Theatre, Thu 18 Feb
As one of Australia’s most well-known comedy imports, Californian comic Arj Barker is part of the furniture here in Adelaide at Fringe time. And it’s not a bad thing to be “Mr Reliable” when it means you know are always on a winner with a ticket to one of Barker’s shows. Organic is a show made of ‘free range’ topics (as is Barker’s observational comedy style) delivered with a winning mix of irony and incredulity. 26 years of experience has honed Barker’s stagecraft and he is a complete performer, knowing exactly how to deliver his lines for maximum effect.
His material this time around included inducting Adelaide on how to get a five star passenger rating with Uber, ways Australians manage to use ‘sh##t’ in everyday sentences and the absolute joys to be found in living a gluten free lifestyle. The jokes are seriously tongue in cheek, and never again will you regard sarcasm to be the lowest form of wit because in Barker’s hands it is absolutely hilarious!
Highlight of the night was his Game Of Thrones tirade – complete gold – that left the crowd in stitches. Barker ends the set with a song and a few give-aways – always a winning combination, right? Barker’s comedy may not change the world, but it will make your night a little brighter and THAT’S worth something.
