The Garden Of Unearthly Delights – The Box, Sun 24 Feb.

[COMEDY/MUSICAL THEATRE ~ USA]

American improv group Baby Wants Candy presents a completely new and improvised musical every night. Past performances have included Kanye West Side Story, and Snowtown: The Musical (it was barrels of fun!).

Potential show titles are nominated by audience members, and by popular audience vote, the show we saw was Homer And Marge Get A Divorce.

Set between the fictional world of The Simpsons television show and the ‘real’ three-dimensional world, the six performers improvised characters, storylines, lyrics, harmonies, and choreography, and covered topics as diverse as family dynamics, inter-dimensional travel, and irritable bowel disease. With approximately ten scenes, and a musical number in each, an impressive amount of original material is presented each night. The ensemble is accompanied by an energetic bunch of local musicians, and the Box as a venue is a haven of air-conditioned bliss.

I couldn’t help but marvel at the skills and talent of the performers. They are truly outstanding! Some people may be cynical and think that it’s is all rehearsed and not improvised, but this is what these artists do day in and day out. This is not trickery – this is pure talent and skill! You need to see these guys to believe how good they are!
