Austral Hotel’s Red Room, Tue Feb 24

Batman vs Superman? Iron Man vs Captain America? Cat Woman vs Wonder Woman? These are the age old questions that baffle even the greatest of minds, turn friends into enemies and will produce hours of fun at this year’s Battle of the Superheros – The Great Superhero Debate over the next six nights. Host Nik Coppin, along with his trusty side kick Andrew Roper, take to the stage to explain the premise of the show – each night three comedians will take to the stage to battle out the age old question of “who is the greatest superhero?” with the winner, chosen by the audience, of the night going through to the grand final on Sunday.

Every night is different and tonight we were treated to a three way battle between The Flash, Gambit and Super Gran. Matt Price was first up and took to the stage in defence of The Flash highlighting his super-fast super-powers and what he would do if he had the same powers. Next was Karl Redgen, the only person to have actual real facts about his superhero, who discussed why Gambit, with his kinetic energy and super good looks, should win the battle. Then there was the hilarious Bruce Fummey representing none other than Super Gran, taking out the title for round one.

This is such a fun and entertaining night where heckling is mildly encouraged, there are games in between rounds and prizes to be won. Even if you know nothing about superheros, as I did, it is immensely funny to watch people pull “facts” out of their behind and make them sound possibly factual. A Super fun night!
