Gluttony – Wonderland Spiegeltent, Thu 22 Feb.

[CABARET/CIRCUS ~ SA PREMIERE ~ GBR]

I’ll begin by admitting I have never been to a cabaret show before and if my experience at Bernie Dieter’s Little Death Club is anything to go by then I am officially a cabaret convert. The intimate space of the Wonderland Spiegeltent truly allows you, as an audience member, to feel up close and personal to the performers and, for some (and our amusement), literally close and personal.

From the get go the Mistress of Ceremonies, Bernie Dieter, and a small band gets the crowd participating and lapping up the strange, exotic and at times confronting acts that make up the Little Death Club; a drag queen, a contortionist, a mime, a stripper, to an emcee that belts out fantastic tune after tune.

All the acts are what one would view as traditional elements of a fringe show but all with a humorous, strange and risqué twist. This is a cabaret not for the feint of heart or the easily offended; all the more reason to see this campy, trashy, punk rock Weimar cabaret extravaganza. It will make you uncomfortable, make you laugh and gasp in awe. But, above all, it will entertain the hell out of you!

4.5 stars
