Blues And Burlesque At La Bohème – Adelaide Fringe Review

Hotter Than Hell – La Bohème, Wed Feb 18 Happy Hour – La Bohème, Thu Feb 19 Patrons arrive to find Pete Saunders already tinkling away at the piano and frankly if that’s all that happens tonight it will have been an enjoyable evening! When Hotter Than Hell gets going it turns out he sings as well in a Randy Newman/Tom Waits kind of way and he does it well. But the show is quickly taken over by tandem hostesses Vicious Delicious and Scarlett Belle whose competitiveness forms a basis for their burlesque shtick. Beneath all the make-up are a couple of women who can really sing, and we are treated to a series of good, some very good, songs. Even more respect to learn that the songs are original. But I’d have to say that in an increasingly competitive market the burlesque routines, which include the obligatory ‘let’s find some chaps in the audience to make a fool of’, are a little old hat. Yet, a reasonably full-house were getting into the spirit! There was less of this in Happy Hour. The piano tinkling is back and the girls sing up a storm but tonight the songs are different. Hits like Diamonds Are Forever are brought to life and go down a treat. And we have special guests. A rope trick act is very entertaining. Fringe performer Womanz brings a sample of her art. And then there was the guest ‘Genie’ burlesque routine; a new idea? I have no idea whether the guests are the same each night or whether it’s a matter of pot luck as to what you will see, but that’s the Fringe! The team who bring us Blues And Burlesque are seasoned performers who know how to entertain. If you like a bit of tease and innuendo in your evening you will have a good time.
