Dunstan Playhouse, Fri 10 Jun

Bobby Fox has ensured the Adelaide Cabaret Festival is off to a spectacular start. The audience was so engrossed with 4 Seasons In 1 Night, it was clear no one wanted it to end, but when it did Fox appeared startled by the eruption of applause and people leaping straight to their feet. The standing ovation was all entirely warranted. Bobby Fox’s voice, back-up singers and band were all absolutely perfect.

Fox performed as Frankie Valli in the Australian production of Jersey Boys for over 850 performances, which has given him plenty of time to perfect his high piercing falsetto to the same amazing powerful quality that Frankie Valli has. Fox spoke of his tales of immense effort leading to landing the role in Jersey Boys, as well as the touching moment of saying goodbye to the role. He had an incredibly charming quality on stage, which was assisted by an enjoyable dash of Irish cheekiness.

All the Frankie Valli favourites were performed with vigour, including Oh What A Night!, Sherry, Walk Like A Man, Grease and Can’t Take My Eyes Off You. Bobby Fox’s voice harmonised beautifully with his 3 back-up singers, who all danced and moved together with absolute precision. There has obviously been an immense effort getting this show to this accuracy. The remaining band on keys, guitar, bass and drums were tight and ensured the show flowed effectively. The audience was also treated to some of Fox’s originals, including Universal Love Song No.1, produced by his band Bobby Fox & The Treatment who have carried through a notable Four Seasons sound.

Overall, 4 Seasons In 1 Night is a brilliant show that should not be missed! Bobby Fox’s powerful falsetto soars around the theatre and it will remain in your heart as you leave.
