Sarah Goussé is presenting her cabaret show The Misadventures of Miss Bouzy Rouge at the Adelaide Fringe 2015. From never having enough money to pay bills – even though she works about 60 part-time jobs – to always wanting to have the glamorous, adventurous life, will Miss Bouzy finally come to the realisation that she is just fabulous the way she is?
We sent Sarah Goussé some entertaining questions. This is what she had to say:
First gig; when and where and how did it go?
“My first gig was when I was 6 years old at the Maltese Guild of South Australia. I was dragged up on stage by my proud parents to sing a Maltese Christmas carol. My cheeks have never been squeezed so much so I knew it went well.”
What drew you into performing?
“I’m not going to lie. I loved the attention. But it ended up being much more than that. It was the best feeling in the world to make people laugh and smile and feel when I performed. There was an overwhelming sense of achievement that I could share this gift and that I didn’t completely suck.”
Favourite performer?
“Judy Garland.”
Performer you would most like to be?
“Barbra Streisand in the ‘60s and ‘70s.”
Duo or trio; who would be your partner/s in crime?
“Duo with the sensational Miss Bee Townsend. She is the Bonnie to my Clyde.”
When did you last ‘corpse’ on stage?
“January. I slid my chair back on stage and rammed it into a stool holding a bottle of Campari, Rum and a semi-boiled kettle which then flew into the chest and lap of an audience member in the front row. I rambled on for what seemed like an eternity before I got back on track.”
What is your best recovery technique for forgetting a line?
“Say anything! It comes to you eventually and the audience doesn’t know you are messing it up.”
Most famous person’s number you have in your phone?
“Clementine Ford.”
Best gig, worst gig and why?
“Best: The second night of my second run of this show at The Butterfly Club. It was flawless and was the most amazing feeling to know that I created this show and that I was doing what I was meant to do.
Worst: I used to sing with a 1940s singing trio and we did this gig at The Spiegeltent last Fringe. We were unable to rehearse as much as we needed to with the band and the guest performer along with the manager/lead singer left us in the lurch. It was a complete shambles!”
Favourite imaginary friend as a kid?
“I only had one and his name was Savass. From a reputable source a.k.a. my mum, we went everywhere together. I insisted there was a place setting at dinner and a spare toothbrush for him.”
Job you currently perform in your alternative life when not performing on stage?
“Hospitality; nannying; importing French wine; vintage styling for photo shoots. I think that’s all.”
Do you have a secret desire to be a movie star?
“Yes, and it’s not a secret at all! I will be a movie star!”
What is your hidden talent?
“I can tap dance. Just.”
Tell us something that people don’t yet know about you.
“I’m scared of moths.”
Favourite childhood memory?
“Picking mulberries with my brother and sister in the garden of a convent where my mum worked nearby. And then eating them all and then lying on the grass with full, satisfied bellies.”
Celebrity meet that left you star-struck?
“I met Mel C after her Jesus Christ Superstar performance and I was completely silly. I felt like I was a 13-year-old groupie.”
Secret crush?
“Gary Oldman. Delicious.”
Time travel: where would you most love to go and why?
“It sounds like a Woody Allen film, but Paris in the 20s. Heaven.”
Most memorable thing someone shouted out during one of your shows?
“After a tale of love and virginity lost, someone yelled out, But we love you!”
What’s something from your childhood that you still love and have today?
“My mother.”
What’s the best trick you have up your sleeve?
“Accents. Something completely contrasting. Such fun!”
Which performer would you 1. Snog? 2. Marry? 3. Avoid?
“Tina Fey, Tina Fey and Justin Bieber!”
If you were a flavour of ice cream, what would you be and why?
“Two scoops: Rum ‘n’ Raisin because it’s boozy and sweet, and Dark chocolate because it’s decadent and naughty yet not entirely bad for you.”
Any famous last words?
“Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second rate version of someone else.” Judy Garland.
