Royal Croquet Club – The Menagerie, Sat 13 Feb
Who knew a yellow foam block with glued on googly-eyes and a cut out mouth could fascinate an audience for a 60 minute show. Bruce is both hilarious and moving.
Presented by the Last Great Hunt, Bruce fuses mime and puppetry to present a heart-warming story of Bruce’s fight for the love of his life, Debbie, who he goes to space and back for. There are some challenging set-backs due to his own internal struggles with grief, confidence and drugs and having to constantly avoid the revenge crusade of one-eyed Joe, a retiring police officer who Bruce accidently shot on his first day on duty (making him one-eyed Joe).
The magic duo in black behind the puppet and its hands are the show’s creators, Tim Watts and Wyatt Nixon-Lloyd, who also created award-winning international smash hits The Adventures Of Alvin Sputnik and It’s Dark Outside. Both have great clear voices perfected for this format to ensure the audience always knows which character is speaking, together with matching the characters struggles, franticness or happiness. They were complimented by fitting music and lighting to enhance each moment.
Bruce combines precise puppetry skills and a brilliant script to keep the audience on the edge of their seat. It is incredibly clever and a joy to experience.
