[CABARET/PHYSICAL THEATRE ~ GBR/RO]

Gluttony – Parasol Lounge, Sat 16 Feb.

The second night of Bubble Show For Adults Only was sold out. Expectations were high and Bubble Laboratory did not disappoint. A high energy show that combines bubble artistry, raunchy acrobatics, comedy, mime, theatrics of all kinds, and a somewhat bizarre love story.

The evening opens with a pair of coy and awkward would-be lovers but soon morphs into unabashed lust, while maintaining a long and very kinetic kiss that spills out into the audience. The story threaded through the performance is that of the development of a relationship, followed by a phase of domestic monotony, disillusionment and demise.

Mainly sharing the stage, at times the pair performed solo; Iulia Benze presents a dramatic Day Of The Dead piece, ending with the use of her shawl to create a spectacular spiralling shower of bubbles that fills the stage, much to the awe of the audience. Kurt Murray laments his sadness, loneliness and longing in a touching moment with a single bubble and a sad song.

But most comedic effects happens when our two performers are on stage together, combining raucous humour with impressive bubble work, an unusual non-bubble use for a hoola hoop, partial nudity, innuendo galore and occasional audience participation.

As well as building impressive bubble structures, given greater dimension with the use of smoke and lights, bubbles are used to represent breasts, balls and buttocks and jiggled suggestively. This show is definitely not one for the easily offended.

Overall Bubble Show For Adults Only is a unique piece of performance art with bubbles galore and an experience not to be missed.
