The Peacock at Gluttony, Fri 2 Mar.

[CIRCUS AND PHYSICAL THEATRE – VIC]

Breathtaking and clever, seven circus performers, who should also be called athletes, defy gravity and had the audience erupting into spontaneous applause with individual and collective feats of strength and beauty. We were all mesmerised by a single piece of rope and what this troupe could do with it.

The team work and concentration required by this troupe is intense. They each literally hold lives in their hands and have to show such trust and confidence in their fellow performers as at times, they are flying through the air, and literally hanging by a thread, the difference between safety and calamity is just the other person(s) being the counterweight.

I couldn’t help but see this performance as a comment on life. At times we must all be the anchor, remaining steadfast and true, allowing someone else the opportunity to fly and then when our turn comes, we are surrounded by those that want nothing more than to be there for you, and raise you up in to the clouds, but at all times, we must each trust in those around us to catch us if we fall.

The acrobatics, stamina, trust and play that was witnessed tonight was a joy to behold; such great skill from accomplished performers and circus practitioners, but also such joy. These artists from One Fell Swoop Circus worked so hard but made it look so very easy.
