[COMEDY/PHYSICAL THEATRE ~ NZ]
The Garden Of Unearthly Delights – Corona, Mon 25 Feb.
You could be forgiven for thinking that with a name like Card Ninja, this show is something of a covert magic show, where card tricks are performed silently and efficiently without notice. This is certainly not the case: from the outset, performer Javier Jarquin explains that this is not a magic show and subsequently goes to great lengths to demonstrate that fact.
What it is, is a show about ninjas, which in my geeky opinion is so much cooler! Just like the old martial arts films, expect a raucous soundtrack (which itself is unique!), plenty of kicks, punches, deadly moves, and cards used as weapons. To demonstrate his ninja skills, the Card Ninja goes through a series of trials, sometimes involving the audience in hilarious ways and to great effect.
Peppered with laugh-out-loud commentary, the Card Ninja is a master of his craft, both at card-flicking and the ancient arts. One of the best shows I’ve seen in a while and something both new and interesting, with plenty of skill. As the show builds to its cinematic climax, you too will find yourself chanting: Niiiiiinjaaaaaaaa!
4.5 stars
