The Garden Of Unearthly Delights’ Studio 7, Tue Feb 17

I really can’t fault Celia Pacquola – except maybe for making me feel like I could never be as funny as her. We were the ‘Tuesday night’ crowd – packed in to Studio 7 and sat on benches reminiscent of those used in school photos: the green paint peeling away. Fortunately for Pacquola, her show was much, much better than any school photo. There were jokes about palm readers, ‘bearded, button-up wankers’, rogue bus drivers, wallets, crystals and bug-eyed babies.

Pacquola assured us that she is the “only comedian doing impersonations of beds” and that being in her double bed – which doubles as a desk, a cosmetic counter, a pharmacy, a fridge and a bin – is “like being spooned by a garage sale”. It’s a bit hackneyed to say ‘side-splitting laughter’ but that’s what it’s like to see Pacquola perform. My face – and sides – hurt. Her laidback, honest and raw approach made the experience even more enjoyable.

Pacquola is undeniably talented, funny and genuine. I left wishing for another hour of comedy magic, and also for Celia to be my new best friend.
