Adelaide Convention Centre, Fri 26 Feb

It’s the country’s worst kept secret – South Australian food and wine is extraordinary and completely deserving of a three day festival in the heart of her capital. In its sixth year, the Cellar Door Fest (previously known as the Cellar Door Wine Festival) has grown from a straightforward ‘wine showcase’ to include produce, beer and interactive experiences such as masterclasses, long lunches and cooking demonstrations.

Internationally acclaimed winemakers rub shoulders with small boutique producers such as Padthaway’s Giggling Goose Wines and will happily share a friendly chat and taste of their sensational sav blanc. Fifteen regions are well represented not only by winemakers but also by local brewers who are a highlight this year, surrounding the new and beautifully constructed ‘beer garden’ and offering samples of a myriad of amazing artisan beers for punters to try.

It is quite easy to be overwhelmed with the many choices so taking a break is made simple with options for food tastings and purchasing of more substantial meals as well. Masterclasses sell out quickly but are an integral part of the Cellar Door Fest experience if you can manage to snag a spot. Having said that, we managed to have a terrific time chatting to producers, sampling as much as we could and simply soaking up the atmosphere. It’s a pretty special experience being surrounded by world class food and wines, knowing they are being produced right on your own doorstep.

Organisers have done well to create a classy, experience-rich event that showcases the very best of South Australian produce and although it may be a case of preaching to the already converted, there is no doubt that you will come away armed not only with your complimentary Plumm wine glass, but also with a list of new ‘must visit’ producers next time you travel around this great state. PS Leave your car at home.
