Producers Garden, Wed 2 Mar
If you’d like comedy more challenging for your cranium, Chris Turner: Observational Tragedy is the place to be. Chris uses a number of methods to engage with his audience. The first of which is getting us to write some ideas onto post-it notes upon entry to the venue and starting the show with a rap including all of these elements (which might take quite a while if the audience were large!).
We were then introduced to Chris’s unusual memory, which remembers facts, but not relational events past about two years ago (very disappointing for girlfriends!). Along the way we shared holidays, family snaps, reminiscences with grandma and grandpa, some twists on quotes from Chris’s favourite philosophers, a wall of quotations on a new girlfriend’s bedroom wall and photo of baby Chris and several toddler cousins in the bathtub which makes this an R+ show (for nudity) – all of which to comic, if not poignant effect.
One of the fascinating stories was of the family pet that died while Chris was walking it (the dog only walked with him reluctantly and always fought the walk). Chris hadn’t noticed that it had actually died along the way. Grandma tried to tell him a different version of the story, but using the music he had been listening to on that day he was able to unlock the memory of the event, which was a bit traumatic. Ah, music, a key to memory. He has tried, and succeeded at linking a month of memories to the songs he listened to that month – it works…
And then there is the rather surprise and revealing finish to the show – after another impromptu rap, well we find out a little more about Chris than we perhaps cared to know… It’s fun, sometimes challenging, with laughs aplenty!
