[CIRCUS AND PHYSICAL THEATRE/Cabaret ~ AUS]

The Octagon at Gluttony, Sat 22 Feb.

Hosted by the talented street turn circus performer, Cal Harris (Elixor, Railed), including the rest of the crew from Head First Acrobats (HFA), Thomas Gorham, Harley Timmermans, Adam McMahon and Anthony Joseph Saltalamacchia (AJ). The multi award winning entertainment company who specialises in acrobatic entertainment, returns to the Adelaide Fringe with Circus’Cision, entertainment plus and a performance of variety, that features the best circus acts at this year’s fringe festival.

The HFA opened the show with dark music dressed in black robes, before kicking off with expert breakdancing and the loudest, ear-splitting whip crack I have ever heard! If anyone in the audience was not entirely awake, that did the trick.

The Octagon was packed to the rafters, where the aerial apparatus was set with what the audience do not see until it is required by the acrobats; the aerial hoop and straps. Possessing extreme strength and agility, adorned in a bright red glittery outfit, Jess showcased her skills of extreme physical flexibility and contortionism on the aerial hoop.

The production concluded with the powerhouse Harley demonstrating extreme athleticism like a breakdance routine in the air on the straps. Followed by the genuinely breathtaking manoeuvre that had the audience gasping, the head first drop!

Among the acrobatic action and gymnastic skills, Chelsea exhibited tremendous coordination with quadruple hoola hoops, Logy (Logan), and his extraordinary beard, performed tricks using cigar boxes, even balancing multiple on his chin, and no circus is complete without some juggling. There was Anthony with his ‘blue balls’ and Adam with juggling pins and an umbrella. Plus, with a Game Of Thrones theme, Cal and Thomas wowed the audience with adagio or partnered acrobatics, such as counterweight balancing.

The act name Circus’Cision apparently derives from a play on words, or does it? Get along to this spectacular circus/cabaret show to decide for yourselves. But be mindful, this show is for adults only as there is some nutcracking nudity (ha ha) along with a few sexual innuendos.

4 stars
