[CIRCUS AND PHYSICAL THEATRE/DANCE THEATRE ~ TZ/ETH/ZWE]

CIRQUE AFRICA returns following a sell-out show at Adelaide Fringe last year and they do not disappoint. The performers present acts of impressive acrobatics, spinning, balancing, dancing, and contorting, all performed to the hypnotic beat of African drums and other African-inspired music especially composed for the show.

As we take our seats to the noises of the jungle, our lively and enthusiastic compere introduces the show and its inspirations. The first performers on stage are four male acrobats dressing in colourful and vibrant African costumes. Cirque Africa - Winston Ruddle - ADLfringe - The ClotheslineThey exhibit impressive strength and agility as they perform their act on a large pole erected in the middle of the stage. What follows is a combination of solo, duo and group acts, all such impressive and strong performances that is hard to single anyone out as a stand out from the impressive line-up.

However, to give you an idea of what to expect, here are a couple of examples: an extremely poised young contortionist seems to do the impossible, drawing gasps of amazement (and a little bit of horror!) in the process. I literally have never seen anything like it! In another act, a solo male performs greater and greater feats of balance, getting higher and higher on a combination of rolling cylinders and wobbly planks that draws loud applause from the mesmerised audience.

At the end of the high-energy 70-minute performance, our compere returns to the stage to announce we were about to get another treat; a 10-minute preview of another Fringe Show, Ebony, a fast paced gymnastic routine by an Ethiopian crew. If our preview was anything to go by, Ebony should also be well worth a visit.

All up this is a very impressive production and is definitely one for the whole family.

4.5 stars
