The Garden Of Unearthly Delights – Magic Mirror Spiegeltent, Tue 21 Feb.
Clairey Browne has thrown off ‘The Banging Rackets’ and is writing and performing her own songs – and it is clear – she’s standing up to be counted. She’s a cross between sex goddess and a femmebot on the stage (in her words, a ‘Fallen China Doll’). But it’s clear it is on her own terms and some folks out there, particularly some drooling men out there, don’t get that. Thus, Clairy has written a song for them to help clarify things, and it goes Fuck You Baby, Gonna Blow You Up.
Clairy’s band consist of keys and PC loops and sounds, percussion/kit and a harmony vocalist – and each of them solid as rocks beneath their main gal, not a step wrong as they presented the new album – Pool. The songs are very much built around a dynamic percussionist and with little to get in his way. There is plenty of variety and mixing it up in the rhythms – plenty of groove to go on. Keys filled in the musical melody and other effects and at some stages were more like a third harmony singer. Speaking of which, she didn’t miss a note, didn’t miss a part and played a very capable role without competing for the stage central attention that was all Clairy’s!
Clairy Browne has intent, serious intent. She is aiming to be an Australian icon of pop, soul and R&B. She can sing, she oozes sass and on centre stage she takes control! The sounds have more soul and a little less edge than the earlier Baby Caught The Bus album and clearly the audience liked very much what they heard!
