[MUSIC/Performance ~ WORLD PREMIERE ~ SA]

The Moa (open-air) at Gluttony, Sat 27 Feb.

I sometimes think of tribute acts like those guys that do World War II re-enactments; essentially missing the intrinsic danger of the real thing, but is a way of people to have some of the experience without getting blown up or bayoneted in a trench somewhere. So a tribute band can be a lot of fun and an enjoyable approximation of the ‘real thing’ that is out of reach because of distance or lack of the original artist from not touring anymore because of death reasons.

Classic Bruce is an all-Adelaide project taking on the monumental task of delivering the music of one of the most iconic singer/songwriter/performers of all time, but also his legendary E Street Band – a combo untouched as the best live band in the world which includes three iconic guitar players. All of the close to twenty-one piece Bruce Classics band version can all certainly play. There’s a kickin’ four-piece horns and six-piece string sections, and an airtight band.

The audience is predisposed to love this set list in advance and it does what it says on the tin. It’s all Springsteen Gold. Thunder Road, I’m On Fire, Jungleland, Ghost Of Tom Joad – all delivered with accuracy and skill. What is missing is the man himself whose charisma, stories and movement are a large part of his appeal. It’s not for nothing that the E in E-Street Band doesn’t stand for Easy-to-replicate. The home stretch of Dancing In The Dark, Wrecking Ball and Born To Run get huge responses and a few even dare to dance.

FOOTNOTE : The Moa is an open air venue and a great space. This show was at 4pm which meant the sun was directly behind the stage causing the audience to engage in mass squinting and sheltering with whatever they had to hand. If going to any daytime shows, take a hat, sunblock and sunnies!
3.5 stars
