[CABARET/BURLESQUE ~ SA]

Nexus Arts, Fri 22 Feb.

The JustAss League, an Adelaide-based burlesque ensemble presented this tribute to the villains of the DC Universe. Now, I’m more of a Marvel girl myself, but I truly appreciated the talent of these artists. Hugo Fielke as the creepy yet compelling Joker gave an outstanding performance as Master of Ceremonies.

Club Gotham, where if you behave, you might make it out alive!”

The sheer physicality of the show was astounding. The artists demonstrated strength, talent, and extraordinary flexibility to give a memorable performance. Some sang, some danced, and the performer playing Robin had an amazing hula hoop routine. Each costume was cleverly constructed for ease of removal, and were also quite detailed. Sequins and sparkles and glitter abounded. And let’s not forget the pasties with comic book-themed logos. Tassels and what I’m told are called ‘assels’ – that girl could make them swing!!!

As this was my first experience watching a burlesque performance, I was pleasantly surprised that so many body types were represented in the ensemble – tall, short, thin, curvy, big breasts, small breasts.

This show is strictly for audiences 18+, and patrons should note the warnings for smoke effects and strobe lighting. Special mention to the surprise guest towards the end of the show who gave a Flashdance-worthy performance!

5 stars
