Salisbury Secret Garden’s Café Maranello, Thu Feb 19

From across the Bass Strait to a suburb or city venue near you during the next few weeks of Fringe – Matthew Dames is bringing his understated self, a rather lovely singing voice, a guitar that seems to know no bounds in terms of alternate tunings and a bunch of songs from his new CD, along with some tastefully chosen covers. (Matthew is actually from Cambridge, England, until a few years ago, so his English folk heritage is quite real.)

His set is minimalist; a battery amp, a mic and stand and a couple of cables to plug things together and away it goes. Expect an intimate performance where his original songs stand up quite well against Paul Simon, Don McLean, some Celtic and traditional songs, along with songs from his associates. It’s funny, but Hawaiian slack tuning and particular cultural alternate and open tunings seem to have a ‘cool’ factor that sometimes eludes the world of folk from which they’ve all actually arisen.

In any case in this show you will enjoy several different tunings played with aplomb and delicacy, decorating some well written (and chosen) songs, so if you’d like to set a quieter and more intimate mood – this might be a show for you!
