The Market Kitchen, Adelaide Central Market, Sat 25 Feb.

The Adelaide Fringe is a fantastic forum to try out new material and concepts with audiences happy to give something new a chance. After the Fringe is finished some of these ideas are left as learning experiences and others build into bigger and better options for the future and Michelle Pearson’s Comfort Food Cabaret falls into the latter. The show needs some refinement, which will improve every time it is performed, but the concept is an absolute winner.

Pearson is an acclaimed Adelaide singer, but as we learn throughout the show her love of food and cooking goes hand-in-hand with music. Supported expertly by Aaron Nash on Comfort Food Cabaret sq - Adelaide Fringe 2017 - The Clotheslinekeys and Michael Ciaramella on bass, Michelle has a superb voice and tonight sang soulful arrangements of everything from At Last, made famous by Etta James to Cold Chisel, while sharing stories of various family and romantic relationships and food. The teenage boyfriend ‘apricot chicken’ disaster got big laughs from the audience and contrasted nicely to stories like Pearson’s early dates with her current fiancé.

Alongside the music and stories, there were cooking demonstrations and audience members helping out in the kitchen, which they all seemed comfortable in doing due to Pearson’s bubbly personality and welcoming environment she created. The food was also delicious with the whole audience receiving tastings of the haloumi, pear and rocket entree, pancetta and tomato pasta for main and sticky date pudding for dessert. People with dietary requirements were also catered for.

There are already sold out performances so if you love your food as well as your cabaret, book your tickets now!
