[CABARET/COMEDY ~ SA PREMIERE – NZL]

Live From Tandanya – Tandanya Arts Café, Thu 21 Feb.

High Octane doesn’t do this show justice! Yes it’s fast-paced, Joana Simmons, who plays Joy, actually is an aerobics instructor (sometimes) and it shows. It’s not only the exercise and action that comes thick and fast, but so do the one-liners and, at times, the delicious comic word play just seems to keep rolling off Joy’s tongue.

In cabaret terms, Confessions is tightly scripted and choreographed and with regularity – it’s time for the next confession. As well as stand-up in Lycra, Joy sings songs of joyous parody and plays her own accompaniment for one of the songs. It’s clearly successful as the roomful of us were laughing and singing along to the chorus on one… “La, la, la, la, die!” was definitely a LOL moment! There are some highly amusing comic twists and themes along the way, including a love song to Gym, Jim, Gin and of course some delightful vulgarities, as the truth about thigh gaps was expounded!

Confessions Of An Aerobics Instructor has been written with some great pacing; at times fast and furious, but with little breaks too – a relief not only for the audience, but also must be necessary for her. Seriously this is a real work-out! There are also some good points of interaction with the audience, including several parts of audience participation that had folks ROFL. I’m not a gym junky, but I thoroughly enjoyed the show and understood most of the banter – I’m sure if gym and cabaret style comedy is your thing then you won’t be disappointed! And if you don’t think it is, you’ll have your mind changed.
