Family dysfunctions may get a few laughs at any wedding reception, but this is no ordinary function. The jam-packed house is treated to an evening of craziness that rapidly descends into chaos. The madcap mayhem generates raucous laughter from the get-go. This talented team demonstrate their fabulous improvisation skills by smoothly bringing the audience onside and giving them their own roles to play. They are invited to maintain their roles throughout the show, and these relationships develop as sub-plots. Some of the audience enjoy taking their parts to the point of spontaneous altercations.
In true commedia del arte style, the action encompasses everything from slapstick to sexy innuendo. With perfect timing and clever writing, all cast members double up to play various characters, changing costumes multiple times. This allows them to bring not only members of both families into the action, at times they even play some the staff of the venue.
Surprise guests appear and threaten to drag the teetering tension into the disaster zone. Skeletons spring from closets, and the speeches bring revelations that make the married couple wonder if they’ve made a mistake. But their vows to entertain us ensure this hilarious frolic reels on relentlessly, despite the squabbles and fights, to the throwing of the bouquet. With just the right touch of seriousness, the farce flows to a joyful finale.
They keep the fun shenanigans going during the meal courses, and it all works seamlessly with the highly efficient restaurant staff. The silliness is studded with songs, sung by characters and sometimes with all the guests present joining in with full voices. The clever script is fast-paced and brimming with jokes. It’s great to see this tight ensemble adding completely original material to their perennially popular Faulty Towers show. You’ll have to be lucky to score tickets for this one, so be quick and don’t miss out.
