[MUSIC/Tribute/Cover Band ~ ADELAIDE FRINGE PREMIERE ~ AUS]

Main Room at The Gov, Tue 15 Mar.

One of the more raucous and original ‘cover bands’ you’re ever likely to encounter in Adelaide, this tribute to Leonard Cohen’s beautiful, disastrous 1977 album Death Of A Ladies’ Man returns to Adelaide Fringe in a slightly reconfigured, acoustic set up, trading in electric guitars for a violinist and an upright bass.

Front-man Leon Bishop remains an utterly transfixing stage presence, delivering Cohen’s depraved lyrics as a combination of glorious maniacal squawks and foreboding prophecies of sexual and romantic doom.

He is accompanied by an incredible band: Shea Gallagher on keys, Thomas Byrne on upright bass, J Wellens on backing vocals, Simon Possingham on drums, with Stella Barrowcliff and Lucien Drivas playing sax and violin respectively; all of whom anchor these disturbing, sometimes ridiculous songs in skilful, completely invigorating musicianship, as well as occasionally embellishing them with beautiful solos. Special credit goes to Barrowcliff on the band’s performance of the album’s title track.

Despite this gig at The Gov being ostensibly a sit-down performance, ultimately the incredible energy of these songs and this band meant that by the end of it the small crowd was on their feet, your humble narrator included, dancing awkwardly but ecstatically along to the goofy, beautiful extravaganza of it all.

5 stars
