Royal Croquet Club – The Parlour, Tue 1 Mar
A great concept for a show! Four sexy young women whose love lives are less than perfect look for love via cabaret. Unfortunately the audience they get doesn’t give them much to choose from. However, not to be deterred, they skillfully make the best of what they have. Each of the desperate and dateless women Lisa, Danny, Jane and Laura has specific needs and desires and a unique history of dating.
There are many laughs as they make musical commentary about the perils of modern dating. There is a token acknowledgement of bisexuality but most of the laughs are about dating men. The songs are about the various places and techniques they have tried to find love and Gary features heavily as the one who got away. The humour is particularly strong when the focus is on social media.
Gin and Tonic are known for their glorious harmonies and use of voice as instrument and the show does not disappoint. There is a great selection of ‘love’ songs, many with clever, punchy lyrics. A highlight is the ode to Tinder. Each member of the group has an opportunity to shine but they are best when they sing together. This is enhanced by their polished choreography.
Much of the humour of this show is based on the premise that the audience is a hunting ground for potential partners. Unfortunately if the audience is mainly female and older men and women there is not much scope for the desperate to lure in potential partners and some of the jokes although still funny fall a bit flat. This is a pity as with the right audience this show could be extremely funny and more edgy.
