Adelaide Bowling Club, Fri 19 Feb

I really had no idea what to expect from the Dinner With The Stars Show, so I was pleasantly surprised to see how professional The Desirables were and how accommodating the staff at the Adelaide Bowling Club were when it turned out that we had special meal requirements. In the end, the food was tasty and wholesome; it felt a bit like going home to your parents for a weekend dinner.

The show was divided into two sets and stretched out over four hours, which means you have plenty of time to talk to your friends and eat in between sets. Singer Sophia Kontogonis impersonates various divas from Sophia Loren to Katy Perry to great effect and is expertly accompanied by the lively band made up of Tony Genovese, Nigel Jackson, David Fitzgerald and Frank Fragomeni.

Great songs from the ‘50s, ‘70s and today are belted out by Sophia and Belinda Martinez (who is excellent as Tina Turner). Basically all songs in the first set are well-known favourites such as Sweet Caroline, I Will Survive and Dancing In The Street. The second set moves into slightly more recent territory with ABBA’s Dancing Queen and Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody and that is also when the audience is encouraged to get up and dance.

Dinner With The Stars Show is a well-executed and entertaining show. The audience is a loyal one with several people returning year after year to see the show and, as a reviewer, it was lovely to see people in their 70s hit the dancefloor.
